God Was With Them Because They Were With God
What happened to those people/cities/nations NOT with God? They were purged. In Noah’s time, the flood overtook them. In Moses’ time in the desert, a whole generation was purged before they could go into the promised land. When Joshua succeeded Moses, he led the Israelites to purge the land of those against God. When many of these same Israelites started to loose focus on God, even the chosen people of God were purged by Assyria and Babylon. God showed some pretty tough love, but kept a remnant by grace. (1 Kings 19:18, Romans 11:4)
I do not want to be in the category of the people outside the ark or the generation who denied God. I don’t want to dwell in the cities of Azekah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon or Debir which could be compared today as living in bitterness, unforgiveness, pride, hatred or vanity. They did not regard the Lord as their God and God did not allow them stay in the land that was described as flowing with milk and honey. Is that us when we allow the worldly things to be our focus? Instead of living under the blessings of God, we choose to live in hell on earth; a world we have made by our own choices.
Even when God’s own people allowed other gods to penetrate their heart, Him allowed other nations to subdue them to Assyria and Babylon. He only kept a remnant.
I hope and pray that you and I are always the remnant God keeps.
Challenge? How many kings and cities did Joshua conquer?
