Read 1 Peter 1:17
I want to focus on the phrase 'reverent fear'. I found so many verses about fearing the Lord and I wanted to share them with you. There are a lot of vs. to look up on your own. I hope you take the time to do it.
In this context 'reverent fear' means a high respect of the Lord. Let me share an example: When I was little my mom told me not to touch the burner on the stove. Of course, being little and curious I touched it anyway. I had to learn the hard way. I learned to highly respect the hot stove. I was motivated by the negative consequence I would sustain.
We are commanded to fear the Lord; to have a high respect for him, but unlike the stove and a negative consequence, our motivation is love for him. We are to have reverent fear of the Lord because we love him, not because we are afraid of him.
Let me share share some vs. with you (remember: I like lists): Deut 6:13; Joshua 24:14; 2Chronicles 19:7; Ps 33:8; Proverbs 3:7; Ecc 12:13 all tell us to 'fear the Lord'.
People who feared the Lord: Noah Gen 9; Abraham Gen 22; Joshua Gen 45-50; Job 1-2 and 42; David Ps 51; Hezekiah 2Kings 18-20, 2Chr 29-31, Is 36-39; Nehemiah (all); the early church.
Reasons for fearing the Lord: *His awesome power 2Chro 32:7-8, Eph 1:19
*His glory John 1:14
*His holiness Heb 12:10
*His majesty Job 37:22
*His greatness Ps 145:3, 150:2
*His forgiveness Acts 10:43
*His faithfulness Ps 117:2
Ways to show our 'fear' of the Lord
*Praise *serve *obey *worship
Benefits of fearing the Lord
*we attain the tools to fight evil (armor)
*we become wise (spiritual wisdom, not worldly wisdom)
*we lengthen our days
God loves those who fear him
God saves those who fear him
God protects those who fear him
God blesses those who fear him
God provides for those who fear him
Remember, God does not want us to fear him because we are scared of what will happen to us if we don't. Remember Christians have no condemnation (Rom 8:1). We should fear/respect the Lord because we love him. So, I challenge you to think about your motivation for fearing the Lord. What kind of fear do you posses? A healthy fear or a fear based on Satan's lies?
God bless you this week.
