I Bet You Have Never Read Galatians Like This Before!

Galatians has become one of my favorite books lately while I have been studying the New Covenant and Jesus fulfilling the law of Moses. The gospel of Jesus is love. The word gospel does not show up until Matthew 4. It is in 20 of the 27 books of the New Testament. It is mentioned over 100 times (depending on what version you use;).

Enjoy! I had fun digging in the Word and creating this idea that came to me as I read.
I almost could not convert it to a blog post, but finally figured it out! (sorry if you got it twice)

Old Covenant Law on the left                       New Covenant Law on the right
It transitions in chapter 5 like the climax of a story into:
Flesh on the left                                             Live by Spirit in the right

Old Covenant Law
New Covenant Spirit
2:16
we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law
but by faith in Jesus Christ
2:18
if I rebuild what I destroy, I really would be a lawbreaker
(Mt 5:17 Jesus fulfilled the law and rebuilding it to live by it  is a sin; Rom 13:10 love is the fulfillment of the law in New Covenat)
2:19
through the law I died to the law
so that I might live for God
2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and Christ lives in me
2:20

The life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me
2:21
for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing
hold on to the grace of God
3:2
did not receive the Spirit by works of the law
received the Spirit by believing what you heard
3:3
you are foolishly trying to finish with the works of the flesh
you began with the Spirit but someone bewitched you
3:5
God did not do these things by the works of the law
God gives you his Spirit and works miracles among you by your believing in what you heard
3:6

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness
3:7

those who have faith are children of Abraham
3:8

God would justify the Gentiles by faith
3:9

those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith
3:10
all those who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, “Cursed is everyone wo does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law” (Deut27:26; Jer11:3)

3:11
clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God
the righteous will live by faith
3:12
the law is not based on faith; the person who does these things [live by law] will live by them [and not by faith]

3:13
curse of the law
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us
3:14

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Jesus Christ
3:14

so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit
3:17
the law introduced 430 after the promise with Abraham does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise

3:18
if inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise
God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise
3:19
the law was added because of transgressions
until the Seed [Jesus] to whom the promise referred to had come
3:19
the law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator

3:20

a mediator implies more than one party; but God is one
3:21
if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law

3:22
Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin
so that what was promised might be given to those who believe and have faith in Jesus Christ
3:23
before faith we were held in custody under the law, locked up until …
the faith that was to come would be revealed
3:24
Law was our guardian…
until Christ came that we might be justified by faith
3:25
no longer under guardian since…
faith has come
3:26

in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith
3:27

for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ
3:28

There is neither Jew or Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female for you are one in Christ
3:29

If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise
4:1-2
if the heir is underage he is subject to guardians and trustees…
until the time set by his father
4:3
when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of this world

4:4

but when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of woman under the law,
4:5

to redeem those under the law that we might receive adoption to sonship
4:6-7
slaves before the Spirit came into your heart
Since you are his sons, God sent his Spirit into our hearts, the Spirit that calls our ‘Abba, Father’. So you are no longer slaves, but God’s child and an heir.
4:8
when you did not know God, you were slaves

4:9
you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces. Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
now you know God or are known by God but…
<——
4:10
You observe special days, months, seasons and years
[Commentary: the days, months, seasons and years have never been or will never be a means for Salvation. Passover, Sabbath year, Day of Atonement, Firstfruits were meticulously observed in attempt to gain  merit before God]
4:17
These people are zealous to win you over but to no good. They want to alienate you from us so you may have zeal for them

4:18

It is good to have zeal provided the purpose is good.
4:21
you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?

4:22
Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman
one by the free woman
4:23
son by slave woman was born according to the flesh
son by free woman was the result of a divine promise
4:24
the women represent two covenants: One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves; this is Hagar

4:25
Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds with the present city of Jerusalem [center of Judaism], because she is in slavery with her children.

4:26
[this heavenly Jerusalem contrasts the present day Jerusalem]
but the Jerusalem above is free [refer to heavenly city of God in which Christ reigns and in which Christians are citizens]
4:28

But you brothers and sisters are like Isaac; children of promise
4:29
the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit.
It is the same now
4:30
“Get rid of the slave woman and her son [Ishmael], they will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son” (Gen 21:10)

4:31

We are not children of the slave woman but of the free woman
5:1

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm and do not let yourselves be burdened by the yoke of slavery.
5:2
I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised [as a condition for God’s acceptance; circumcision impeded the development of the Christian life] Christ will be of no value to you at all.

5:3
every man who lets himself be circumcised is obligated to follow the whole law

5:4
you who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated yourself from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

5:5

For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
5:6

In Christ, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
5:7-
12
(explains that the ‘yeast’ which is persuasive Judaizers are hindering them)

5:11
if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted (commentary: because human pride refuses to acknowledge that it is incapable of doing anything to merit salvation)
In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished (Paul’s teaching focused on Christ’s finished work on the cross. This offended the Judaizers)

                        FLESH
****************************************TURNING              This is how a person following the Spirit of the
                                           Not in the flesh, but
                                                  TRANSITION!!
                               SPIRIT
POINT*********************************************
New Covenant should conduct themselves.
in the Spirit
TRANSITION!!
5:13

You were called to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge in the flesh rather serve one another humbly in love.
5:14

For the entire law is fulfilled by keeping this one command, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
5:15

If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. (I know people like this, do you?FB is a horrible outlet for people who do not follow 5:14..just saying)
5:16

Walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
5:17

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so you are not to do whatever you want.
5:18
not under the law if…
led by the Spirit
5:19-
21
Acts of the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

5:21
Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

5:22-
23

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
5:23

Against such things there is no law.
5:24

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
5:25

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
5:26

Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
6:1
But watch yourselves or you also may be tempted
if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.
6:2

carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.
6:3
If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves

6:4

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.
6:5

for each one should carry is own load
6:6

the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructors
6:7
Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

6:8
Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction
whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
6:9

Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up
6:10

Therefore, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
6:12
Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ

6:13
Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh.

6:14

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
6:15
Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything
what counts is the new creation (In Christ the redeemed undergo a transformation i.e. they transition into a new being)
6:16

Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God
6:17

From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
6:18

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit…Amen.
