The Word: For Today, For Tomorrow, Forever

Read Hebrews 4:12-13
Title in NIV: The Word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword.

I know there are only two verses today, but they pack quite a punch. It will take me three maybe four weeks to share my thoughts. I promise I won't make them as long as last week! There are about six concepts that struck me as important. Over the next few weeks, I will be considering them.

1. The Word is living and active.
2. It is sharper than any double-edged sword.
3. It divides soul and spirit; joints and marrow.
4. It judges thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
5. Nothing is hidden from God's sight.
6.  All is laid bare before him whom we must give account.

Number 1 says the Word is active and alive.  I know if you read/hear a lesson several times about the same topic, you will find something new that you 'missed' before. I think what we learn depends on what season we are in, in our life. Every season in our life or every situation can bring forth a message designed especially for us. The Word is active and gives us what we need to hear at the perfect moment we need to hear it. It is like that with the radio station I listen to, too (94.9KLTY). A song I need to hear to help me through my day always comes when I need it.

Take the Martha and Mary story from Luke 10:38. We get one aspect that can help us through the eyes of Mary. We get another aspect through the eyes of Martha. We get even another aspect if we look through the eyes of Jesus. Depending on where you are in your life, one of those aspects will teach you more than the others. And like the saying about Texas weather:  wait a short time and it will be completely different, in a week or so, another aspect will teach something new. Emily Coalson described the Word as 'layered with truths." That is a good description, I think, considering we can learn one thing today, another tomorrow and something completely different next week.

Challenge: read one of your favorite bible stories and open yourself up to a new thought.

Jeremiah 23:29 says the word is like fire. Here lately, that image is a little too close to home with the fires at PK...and behind my house two weeks ago. But, if you allow the Word to penetrate your heart and soul, it will spread. If you continue to feed it, no one can stop its progress or its effect on you.

Challenge: read on of your favorite bible stories and open your heart for a new message from God.

Next week I will discuss # 2 and #3. Come back to see me!!
