Don't Recycle Your Garbage!

Read Romans 12:9-21
Theme: Christian relationships and attitudes
Title in NIV: Love and respect for others (not garbage for them)

Last week we discussed how we are all connected, like a puzzle. This week Paul discusses how to use love and respect as the glue to hold our puzzle of people together for the glory of Christ.

I want my family to look forward to coming home. I want them to think of home as a safe, comfortable place. We should work hard using respect and love so people look forward to seeing us. We should use respect and love to make people comfortable around us. We should use respect and love in our life to benefit others. How do we do that? (I like lists) We should have love and respect in our heart, not garbage.

1. our love must be sincere
2. hate what is evil, cling to what is good
3. be devoted to one another in brotherly love
4. honor one another above yourselves
5. never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord
6. be joyful in hope
7. be patient in affliction
8. faithful in prayer
9. share with God's people who are in need
10. practice hospitality
11. bless those who persecute you
12. rejoice with those who rejoice
13. mourn with those who mourn
14.live in harmony with one another
15. do not be proud
16. be willing to associate with people of low position
17. do not be conceited
18. do not repay anyone evil for evil
19. be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone
20. live at peace with everyone
21. do not take revenge, but leave room for God's wrath
22. if your enemy is hungry, feed him
23. if your enemy is thirsty, give him something to drink
24. do not overcome evil by evil
25. overcome evil with good

I got the best e-mail today that relates to this scripture. It describes a man who got cut off in traffic and had to slam on the brakes. The man who cut him off started yelling at HIM. The man who was cut off just smiled and waved. He said that the man was like a garbage truck. He had a lot of garbage inside him. He held on to the garbage until he just had to unload on someone. This time, the man said, it was me who he unloaded on. But, he said, I will not take his garbage as my own and pass it out to my family, friends and co-workers during a tough day. I choose to have love and respect inside of me for people, even those who throw their garbage at me. (Thanks, Anna)

Turn your garbage into love and respect. Don't recycle.

I can relate. I have a very , shall I say unhappy lady, be very tacky to me in a parking lot. She ranted and I kept praying , "Dear God, please let her be having a bad day and not like this all the time." God helped me pray this prayer, because she was scary. Your list is looking good.
