Read Romans 1:18-20
Theme: All men's guilt as sinners (1:18-3:20)
Title in NIV: God reveals himself in his creation.
Scientist have it all wrong (the ones that deny God)! They think science and faith are opposed which, in fact, the pursuit of them are the same. Science is based on an unknown truth. Face it, E=MC squared was already there, scientist just observed it, tested it and named it. Whatever scientist are observing, testing and discovering is truth they are trying to figure out. D x R = circumference was truth long before it was called circumference. Faith is the same. Faith is based on Truth we hope for but we do not see. If we learn about this Truth and test it, we realize that it was there all the time, we just needed to accept them.
Verse 18 tells us the problem: "people who do not believe (accept) suppress the truth...[even though it] has been clearly seen." Just because we don't see it is not reason not to believe it. We don't see gravity although we see the effect gravity has on, well.... everything. We many not have seen Jesus raised from the grave, but Christians see the effect his resurrection has on their life. God says what may be known about him is plain because he makes it plain. Suppressing the truth is a choice. His truth is clearly seen, being understood from what has been made--- tada--- science (observing what has been made). How can you look a cells parts and say God does not exist and it is all a good accident? (Okay, I was going to name all the cell parts but there were 16 or more...not to mention their functions)
Therefore, since we can look at nature and clearly see God's eternal power and divine nature in creation, men are without excuse when they do not believe.
Science and faith go hand in hand because the truth is, God created men with curiosity about all things and we call this curiosity science.
Read 1:21-32
Theme: All men's guilt as sinners
Title in NIV: God gives man over to his sin.
Remember those scientist we just discussed, the ones that deny God? God says that if they persist in suppressing the truth, He will allow their hearts to get dark. If a person, who has free will given by God, does not choose to glorify God or give thanks to him, his thinking becomes futile and his heart foolish. They may claim to be wise because they know lots of worldly 'stuff', but the worlds knowledge is foolishness compared to the knowledge of God.
They exchange the truth for a lie and worship created things instead of the Creator. Since God gives them over to their sinful desires (He says it 3 times here), man does despicable things: sexual impurity and homosexuality to name a few. God did not intend for men to be out of control. Men have chosen that path as early as the garden of Eden.
What does God say this kind of 'freedom' produces? A penalty for their perversion. Could God be talking about STDs or Aids? Worldly freedom only produces a false sense that you are in control of yourself and your circumstances. Worldly freedom produces many consequences such as STDs, aids, pregnancy, speeding tickets, hurt friends, road rage, vanity, pride on and on. Freedom in Jesus is free from STDs, free from speeding tickets, free from hurts, free from jealousy, free from comparing our self with our friends, free from guilt, free from worry. Who would want the former when they can have the latter?? Christians choose the latter. Oh sure, we mess up, but that is where grace comes in.
Man did not think the knowledge of God was worthwhile and again we see God "gave them over to a depraved mind" (vs. 28). When man started making his own decisions-in the garden- and left God out, many things began to proceed from desires: filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, depravity, envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice, gossip, slander, God haters, insolent, arrogant, boastful, invent ways of dong evil, disobey parents, senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. People who have denied God continue in these practices and keep company of those who do the same.
Don't get discouraged. This only lasts until chapter 3. Chapter 3:21 begins..."But now..." Hang with me to hear the good stuff in five weeks.
